Yoga to Ease Neck Pain
Viniyoga is a highly individualized style of yoga in which the practitioner learns to adapt poses and goals based on their distinct needs and abilities. Pain sufferers, this is the approach you need. Here's why: The following viniyoga poses move the head rather than keeping it static to take pressure off the neck. Problems in the neck and shoulders are often caused by chronic tension—you know that tight and achy feeling after a day of too much stress and too little exercise. That's when yoga can come in handy. It's important, however, to differentiate between ordinary neck tension and cervical disk problems. If you have tingling or numbness down the arm, see a neurologist. If the pain is localized to your neck region, roll out your mat.

pose (trikonasana), variation
Stand with your feet spread just slightly wider than your shoulders (a shorter stance than usual in this pose). Turn your right foot out 90 degrees and raise your right arm up alongside your ear, leaving your left arm at your side. On your exhale, bend at your waist, reaching out over your right leg and bringing your right hand down below your knee. Reach your left arm back parallel to the floor and turn your head down to look at your right hand. Inhale and sweep your left arm up toward the ceiling while turning your head up to gaze at your left hand. On your exhale, bring your left hand back parallel to the floor and you're your head down to look down at your right hand. Repeat this arm and head vinyasa six times before switching sides and repeating another six times.
