You've heard of counterfeit purses and jewelry, but what about dildos? A recent increase in knock-off sex toys could be making your sex less than safe, according to adult industry news outlet, Xbiz. To combat these issues, a new Product Piracy Pilot Program is being launched to crack down on counterfeiters and their inferior products that are often passed off as originals on sites like eBay and Amazon. Still, it’s still worth it to be wary when purchasing.
It's crucial to knowallabout your toys (and not just how to play with them), says sex expert Logan Levkoff, Ph.D. "Because of the nature of how you use sex-related products, for external or insertive use, it is important that you know where your toy comes from and what it's made out of," says Levkoff. "Unfortunately, some of these knockoff companies—and just others in general—make sexual enhancements that have toxic chemicals in them." And in addition to exposure to bad-for-you materials, these can cause immediate irritation or infection. Not sexy.

So how can you make sure your tools are safe? Levkoff suggests only buying your sex toys at reputable shops like Babeland or Goodvibes, or you can go directly to the sex toy manufacturer's site (like buying the Vibrating Multi-Thrill from Trojan or the ). And look out for big red flags, like if a 0 sex toy is being sold for . Finally, make sure the products are made from body-safe materials, like silicone or stainless steel, especially if they’re for internal use.
