What is time?

Each of us daily uses such a thing as time in our life. What is time? At first, this question may seem very easy, since we are all accustomed to associating time directly with our daily activities, but on closer examination, it’s not so easy to describe time as an abstract concept.

So what does time mean in our lives? There are many definitions of time, but the main aspects of this concept are the following characteristics:

  • time is determined by the coordinates of the time axis;
  • time is the interval between events;
  • time is used as a parameter when comparing two or more different-frequency processes.

Time has the following properties:

  • Orientation (from the past to the future through the present);
  • Time has a specific reference system (either uniform or non-uniform);

We can say with precision that there is no one on which time depends, since all the states of the world depend on him. But still, in some cases, the dependence of some quantity on the time itself may turn out to be very weak,therefore, it can be considered independent of time. On this basis, all phenomena can be divided into 3 groups:

  • stationary (do not change with time);
  • non-stationary (change with time);
  • quasistationary (the scale of the evolution of these phenomena is much larger than the period of time that is considered in the task).

Scientific concepts of time

In science, there is no single theory that describes time uniformly. A lot of assumptions are put forward, each of which can claim to be a separate existence. Consider what time means in the following scientific studies:

  • In physics, time is a reversible measure of the motion of matter, one of the coordinates of the vectors of space and time. The basis of the measurement of time is a certain periodic sequence of events (the work of the clock is based on this). Time determines the course of all processes, but at the same time all the latter do not affect the passage of time.
  • In psychology, time is a subjective feeling, depending on the state of the observer. This science distinguishes cyclical and linear time.
  • In philosophy, time is an irreversible flow that flows in one direction (from past to future through the present) within which all existing facts are located.Here are the definitions of time that were given in different epochs: time is cyclical and represents a repetition of the past (mythology); time is a subjective way of perceiving monads (Leibniz); time exists as an a priori form of sensual contemplation (Kant); time is a category of absolute spirit (Hegel); time is one way of manifestation of duration (Bergson); time is a real form of moving matter (dialectical materialism).
  • In history, time is the basic quantity characterizing certain events on a certain interval of the existence of a society. Depending on this, in historical science, epoch, era, period, and age are distinguished.
  • On the Internet, time is a value equal to a bit according to the concept of an alternative reference system of the time of day proposed by the Swiss company SWATCH (1/1000 days).

What does time in astronomy mean? Here, this concept is associated with the daily rotation of the Earth, so there are several temporary types:

  • true local solar time (this time is indicated by the sundial);
  • average local solar time (differs from the true with a difference of ± 15 minutes);
  • Greenwich time (equally accepted for the whole globe);
  • standard time (24 time zones, taken for convenience);
  • maternity time (the “standard time plus one hour” time system is what maternity time was, which was adopted in 1930 in the USSR by government decree and canceled only on March 27, 2011);
  • summertime (moving the hands forward and backward an hour);
  • sidereal time (the culmination of the vernal equinox).

Time units

What is time? In the conventional sense, there is a whole scale of definitions of time:

  • millennium (1000 years);
  • century (100 years);
  • year (365/366 days);
  • month (31/30 days);
  • week (7 days);
  • day (24 hours);
  • hour (60 minutes);
  • minute (60 seconds);
  • second.

Depending on this, time is usually measured using a calendar (year / day), hours (hour / minute / second), timer and stopwatch (measuring time intervals).
