What is navigation?

Being in an unfamiliar city, forest or sea area, you are likely to use certain means that will help you determine your location, as well as the position of other important objects relative to yourself. All this relates to navigation. Let's take a closer look at what navigation is.

Navigation literally (from lat. Navigatio) means "walking on the sea." In general, navigation is the science of determining the location of an object. The main area for navigation is the sea.

There are other navigation values:

  • The sphere of navigation and shipping.
  • Season and season when shipping is possible. For example, in St. Petersburg, in such a period, bridges are erected for the passage of vessels.
  • Section of scientific knowledge, which deals with various methods of driving ships.

In addition to the marine theme, which was the ancestor of navigation, now there is automobile, underground, biological, satellite navigation, which are based on the ability to coordinate and determine location in space and time.

For example, the GPS navigation system is familiar to every motorist and consists in determining the optimal route for the terrain, as well as in fixing the coordinates of the current location - latitude and longitude. This is done with the help of special devices - navigators. In nature, they speak of biological navigation as the ability of living organisms to orient themselves towards terrain and among other organisms.
