What is a board?

Words in Russian often have a very interesting and long history. That is the word "collegium." What is a collegium, what does this word mean?

Meaning of the word "board"

  • For the first time in Russia, this word appeared under Peter the First, when he replaced the former governing bodies in the country — orders — at the board (a prototype of ministries). At the board, issues were decided jointly, that is, collectively (hence the name). For example: "The reform of the public administration of Peter 1 included the establishment of colleges, which replaced the cumbersome mandative system."
  • The board is also a group of officials that decides important matters in the management (panel of judges, board of foreign affairs, and many others). For example: "Important decisions were taken at a meeting of the Youth College."
  • Board is the composition of teachers of educational institutions, often with academic degrees. For example: "A college of university professors gathered for a regular meeting."
  • This is a voluntary association of persons of the same profession in order to solve the most pressing problems.
