Rutgers Bans All Fraternity and Sorority Parties for the Remainder of the Year
Rutgers University banned all fraternity and sorority house parties for the remainder of the school year, university officials told NJ.com on Monday. Greek presidents were informed of the university's decision at a meeting last Wednesday.
The school's 86 Greek chapters will be permitted to hold their end-of-year formals, but all other social events must be canceled.
"Rutgers takes seriously its commitment to maintaining a healthy and safe campus environment. In light of a number of alcohol-related incidents this year involving Greek organizations, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs has placed a moratorium through the end of the semester on parties in fraternity and sorority houses," Rutgers spokesman E.J. Miranda told NJ.com regarding the ban.
According to aDaily Targumarticle published after the announcement, there are six fraternities and one sorority at Rutgers that are under disciplinary review by the school.
In September 2014, 19-year-old Caitlyn Kovacs died of alcohol poisoning after a Rutgers Delta Kappa Epsilon house party, reported NorthJersey.com. Just two months later, a 20-year-old student and Sigma Phi Epsilon member was hospitalized for alcohol poisoning. Sigma Phi Epsilon nationals shut the Rutgers chapter down in March.
President of Rutgers's Panhellenic Association Erin Hearns told NJ.com that while Greek seniors expressed concerns at the meeting about missing out on some of their last events, most chapter presidents were accepting of the ban: "It kind of became the idea of what are we willing to risk our community for? Is it really worth it for the last three weeks of our semester?"
University officials have not stated how long they plan to enforce the ban.
