Matt Lauer Is "Weak and Broken and Ashamed" After Today Show Firing, a Source Claims
A week after being fired from NBC'sTodayshow, Matt Lauer is allegedly still reeling from sexual harassment accusations and the fate of his career.
"He is weak and broken and ashamed by his own admission," a former Today show colleague revealed toPeople.
"He is my friend," the colleague added. "He is human, and he is flawed. But is he going to use his power to be a predator on women? Until I see solid evidence of that, I just can't believe it. We don't know the details."
NBC fired Lauer following a colleague's charge of an inappropriate relationship that began in 2014, and since then multiple other women have come forward to accuse him of sexual harassment, described in an investigation byVariety.Viewers were told of his dismissal at the top of last Wednesday's show.
On the week Lauer was fired,Todayshow beat its rivals at ABC for the first time in three months.
The Nielsen company saidTodayhad more viewers thanGood Morning Americaall five days last week — the first time that has happened in nearly a year.
Nielsen saidTodayviewership shot up from 4.2 million viewers on Tuesday to 5.7 million on Wednesday. The show had 5.2 million viewers for Thursday's show, during which Lauer issued a statement.
