Leg cramps - causes
Muscle cramps are an involuntary uncontrolled contraction of one or more muscle groups. Most often it is an absolutely harmless phenomenon. But sometimes cramps can cause a lot of trouble, especially at night. It should be noted that in most cases seizures develop in the muscles of the legs, especially in the calves, feet and ankles. Their main symptoms are sudden severe pain of a certain area, for example, a toe, which is accompanied by muscle tension.
In most cases, the origins of such a sudden phenomenon are unknown. This may be excessive load, and dehydration, and stretching. By the way, most often a banal stay in one position for a long period may be the only cause of seizures. Although most of these cramps are not harmful, some of them can be directly related to the following diseases:
- Atherosclerosis of the limbs. In other words, the narrowing of the arteries that supply blood to the extremities leads to disruption of the blood supply, which in turn leads to seizures.
- Spinal stenosis. The relief of spinal nerves leads to an involuntary contraction of muscle tissue, both in the legs and arms.
- Lack of minerals (potassium, magnesium) in the body.
