How to treat sore throat in a small child?
Perhaps you did not notice, but it is the sore throat that is one of the most common childhood diseases: mature and elderly people do not get sick with it, but teenagers, and especially children, most often.
Usually before reaching the age of five, most of the children have time to feel all the hardships of such a disease, and children with chronic tonsillitis face angina every year, and sometimes 5-6 times a year.
This is due to the fact that the children's body does not yet have such a strong immunity to stand up to such a serious disease, which not only frightens its symptoms, but also possible complications.
If you are even convinced that you know how to treat angina in children, then it will not be superfluous to appear to a specialist, because this disease is so insidious that it has different forms and types, which need to be treated differently.
If you have successfully dealt with the disease once, then it does not mean that the same methods will help another time,therefore, be careful and if after three or four days of home treatment there are no improvements, consult a doctor.
Improper and delayed treatment can lead to the development of dangerous chronic diseases, such as inflammation of the kidneys, impaired activity of the heart and immune system, and chronic tonsillitis.
What is angina and how is it transmitted?
Some parents are pondering, but what is so terrible about a sore throat? Well, the child was supercooled, his hands or feet were frozen, and his throat ached, he was getting sick and stopped, and there are enough folk remedies for recovery.
But in fact, not everything is so simple: a sore throat, which is the main symptom of the disease, does not arise, but from hypothermia, but from dangerous germs that are activated by the weakened immune functions of the body.
A sore throat can also be transmitted by airborne droplets, that is, if a healthy person communicates with a patient, drinks from his glass or eats from one dish.
Most often, the infection affects the palatine tonsils, but it may well spread to other nearby organs.Angina can be classified according to the method of occurrence: primary (simple form with common signs and intoxication of the body) and secondary (as a result of acute infectious diseases, such as diphtheria or scarlet fever). Also, depending on the infection that causes the disease, angina is divided into the following types:
- bacterial, purulent;
- viral (adenovirus, herpetic, enterovirus);
The easiest is the primary sore throat, it is quite possible to cure it on your own, but diphtheria and fungal infections are among the most dangerous ones that require hospitalization and control by a specialist. All these types have both common symptoms and some differences. So, the main symptoms of the disease:
- sore throat, which does not allow normal swallowing, constant tickling and the desire to cough;
- redness in the throat and tonsils;
- weakness, headache, fever;
- glands swell and increase in size.
When purulent sore throat on the tonsils may appear education in the form of yellowish abscesses, the temperature can rise to 41 degrees, there is a strong intoxication, vomiting.When fungal tonsillitis also occurs on the tonsils, however, white, because of what it is sometimes difficult to distinguish from other diseases, such as candidiasis or infectious mononucleosis.
In any case, if you see that the general condition of the child is not improving, and all the more serious symptoms are only increasing, then you may have to resort to inpatient treatment.
And if the child is less than 3 years old?
As it has already been said more than once, a sore throat is a rather serious disease, therefore children in the first year of life and, preferably, even up to 3 years should be treated under the supervision of a specialist in a hospital.
At home, you can cope, but only under the strict supervision of a physician, because standard treatment at this age involves the mandatory use of antibiotics. Some folk remedies, which are often practiced with angina, here, most likely, can not do.
How to cure a child at home?
Of course, the principle of treatment will vary depending on the degree and type of the disease, but still there is a general scheme. Once upon a time, at the time of our grandmothers, there was a special and, in their opinion, effective method: to lubricate the throat with iodine, and a little later Lugol’s solution was actively used.
Frankly speaking, the procedure is not one of the most pleasant, and, as it turned out over time, it does not carry anything useful in itself. Because of the burning solution, the protective layer of the mucous membrane is damaged, with the result that microbes only penetrate deeper into the tonsils.
Therefore, such popular methods are still better left to give preference to modern sprays and aerosols, for example, Ingalipt, Hexoram, Tantum, Miramistin, Stopangin and others have recommended themselves well.
Without local treatment, the process of treating a sore throat can be delayed for a long time, so if your child does not like or cannot gargle, then he must be taught this. The simplest and most popular is the solution of drinking soda (about 1 teaspoon of soda is consumed per glass of water).
You need to rinse every 2-3 hours, while reducing pain, the number of approaches can be reduced to 4-5 per day. Another not very pleasant, but very effective solution for rinsing: a teaspoon of sea salt in a glass of boiled water, the rinse pattern remains the same.
Also suitable for this purpose is a solution of potassium permanganate (several crystals on a half glass of water), a solution of calendula or a tincture of sage, there you can act strictly according to the instructions indicated on the package.
Some prefer to be treated with honey: lubricate their sore throats. Honey is, of course, a useful medicine, but it can cause irritation, therefore it is better to take it several days after an exacerbation, and, preferably, as part of warm milk or tea. But local treatment alone may not be enough.
Since the root cause of angina is a weakening of the immune system, it is necessary to drink vitamin complexes to strengthen it. If the child's temperature rises above 38 degrees in the process of illness, then it must be shot down: children are usually prescribed Panadol, Nurofen or Efferalgan in such cases, and children are recommended to have antipyretic suppositories.
In order for the treatment to progress, as soon as possible, do not forget that the child must constantly and drink a lot, for this tea with raspberry or lemon, dogrose decoction, even plain mineral water without gas will do.
For more serious forms of angina, the doctor may prescribe antibiotics, but remember that the course of taking such drugs is usually calculated for no more than 5-7 days. But prematurely refuse to receive antibiotics is not worth it, even if the child is better, otherwise you risk provoking a relapse.
