Danish Study Says Light Drinking During Pregnancy Is A-OK
New York City doctors are either more laid-back or ahead of the trends, but a study by Danish researchers just confirmed what my friends' OBGYNs have been saying for years: An occasional drink during pregnancy isn't going to harm the baby.
FromTime: "Light to moderate drinking early in pregnancy—up to eight drinks a week—has no effect on intelligence, attention or self-control in children at age 5. Drinking more heavily, however, was associated with measurable negative effects." (Duh, on that last part.)
With everything pregnancy-related, my doctor was incredibly laid-back and she encouraged me to trust my instincts. "You're not going to a shady sushi shop where the fish looks rancid, but you can occasionally eat fresh raw fish if you're smart about it." And, "You're not getting drunk, but you can sip your way through one glass of wine over the course of a dinner once in a while." In fact, when I couldn't sleep AT ALL for the last month of my pregnancy, her suggested remedy was a small glass of red wine. (Which, I'm happy to report, did the trick.) Meanwhile, when one of my mom's friends was pregnant and couldn't sleep in the '70s, her doctor "prescribed" a Manhattan, a drink that contains bourbon and vermouth! Her son is fine—and so is mine.
I think Americans, in general, have trouble with the concept of "moderation." Plus, we're a sue-happy society, so most doctors know to say, "Drink nothing!" because if they say, "Have an occasional glass of wine" and a pregnant woman is dumb enough to drink a bottle, then there's going to a lawsuit.
