What is the Russian name?

Russian people are known around the world for their national characteristics. And not always with their cheerful and noisy temper, love for alcohol, bass and lack of culture. It is rather the characteristics of our tourists, who in Russia do not behave better. But the main qualities of Russians, which are valued abroad, and other nations living in our country, are completely different. It is intelligence, seriousness, talent, assertiveness, loyalty, unpretentiousness, earnestness, sincerity. It is very interesting to look at how they call Russians in different countries; by these names one can even trace the history of relations between different countries.

Peoples of the former USSR

Ukrainians call us Muscovites, Muscovites, Katsaps. Such names appear in historical stories and anecdotes. We are also called by Rusaks and Rus those nations that were not separated into separate republics and still live on the territory of Russia - Mordovians, Chuvash, etc. But the Kazakhs call us Yorys, this name comes from the word Rus.In the Caucasus, the Russians have not very affectionate names. We were rewarded with the epithet “Vanka” for short-sightedness, and the name “loaf” was derived from the word “booze”, given to Russians for their love of alcohol, much more than the Caucasians themselves.

Peoples of other countries

The Finns have come up with two names for us. One of them is contemptuous - “ryussya”, the second generally accepted neutral name for the Russian people is “vanyalyainen”. In the USA and Germany, we have been called Ivan since the Great Patriotic War. There is nothing offensive in this name, just as we call all Germans Fritz and Hans. In the United States, in addition to this word, the word "kommiz", which means "communism", is still used to indicate the Russian nation. In Japan, there is only one name, which is called all foreigners, including Russians - gaijin. In Afghanistan, at the time of the warfare, they gave the name to the Russians - shuravi.

If you are going to travel, then it is advisable to familiarize yourself with what is called the Russians, in order to understand and make yourself understand your origin. And one more thing - the most frequent trips are made by Russians to European countries, and so there we are for all English-speaking (and almost everybody knows this language) called raskas or ruski.
