A cheat’s guide to weight loss
Lose weight with green tea and chillies
The perfect weight-loss combo; a hot curry washed down with some green tea. A paper published in the journalClinical Nutritionfound that green tea and chillies are even more powerful combined than when eaten alone. This is because they are both thermogenic – meaning they heat up the body, making it burn more fat.
Burn extra calories by chewing gum
University of Rhode Island researchers have found that chewing sugar-free gum reduces the amount you eat and speeds up your metabolism.
A separate study published in the journalAppetitefound that gum-chewers ate 36% fewer calories each time they snacked because their appetite had been sated. Chewing gum burns eleven extra calories per hour. That’s 19% more calories than just sitting in front of your computer screen.
While that doesn’t sound like a lot, if you chew for four hours daily it adds up to 4.5lbs per year. And that’s without counting the calorie savings from the snacks you're not eating.
Prevent hunger pangs by eating blueberries
A recent study by the University of Michigan found that eating blueberries burns belly fat, even if you eat a high-fat diet. A previous 2007 study by the University of Illinois found that blueberries can stop your from overeating. Men fed blueberry extract before a meal ate 9% less than their counterparts.
“Antioxidants may trigger receptors in your upper intestine that tell your brain you're full,” says lead researcher Dr Abdul Molan. This translates into a loss of about 5lb per year if you eat onepunnet of berriesper day.
Cut sweeteners to cut calories
Low calorie sweeteners can make you pile on the pounds says a Purdue University study. They found that rats fed saccharine gained 36% more weight than rats fed real sugar.
One theory is that while sweeteners trick your taste buds they don’t fool the brain because you don’t get that energy jolt it expects from a sweet treat. So you’ll have the munchies until you consume the amount of calories, or more, that your brain expected.
Eat apples to fill yourself up
An apple a day keeps love handles at bay. Pennsylvania State University scientists have found that men who snack on an apple 15 minutes before eating a meal consume 200 fewer calories.
The scientists think the reasons for this are twofold: firstly, apples are full of soluble fibre that fills you up. Secondly, because apples are crunchy and chewy they are a more ‘satisfying’ snack and signal to the brain that you have eaten something substantial. Three apples per day (if each apple is 110 calories) equates to a weight loss of 28lb per year.
Listen to music to burn more calories in the gym
A recent study by theNorth American Association for the Study of Obesityfound that men who listen to their favourite tunes on their Ipod are more likely to go for the burn and stick with their exercise regime.
The best tunes are those that match you heart’s bpm (beats per minute) as you excercise because you’ll subconsciously work harder to keep in time with the beat. Use the bpm feature on your cardio machine to calculate yours, then click onto Jogtunes (jogtunes.com) to find your anatomically perfect playlist.
Drink vinegar to store less body fat
A study published in theJournal of Agricultural and Food Chemistryfound that a spoonful of vinegar before or after meals could reduce the amount of fat your body stores by 10%. The scientists say that the acetic acid found in vinegar helps the body break down fat so that it’s excreted out of your system instead of stored. Just hold the fish and chips.
Lose weight by having a lie-in
A study by theAssociated Professional Sleep Societieshas found that men lose three times more weight while sleeping than while watching TV.
This is because your brain (which only comprises of 2% of your body’s weight) uses 20% of the body’s calories. When you enter REM sleep the brain is working three times harder than normal, thus burning more calories.
Burn fat with Tabasco sauce
Oxford Brookes University scientists have found that adding 5g of Tabasco sauce to a meal can raise your metabolic rate by 20% for two hours after eating. For optimum results the scientists say you’ll need to add it to every meal, so skip the cornflakes and rustle up some spicy eggs.
